Tenn. Wesleyan Has Two Big Innings, End UVA-Wise Baseball Season

Kingsport, TN – Appalachian Athletic Conference regular season champion and top regional seed Tennessee Wesleyan posted two big innings to end the UVA-Wise baseball season. The Bulldogs scored seven times in the second and another five in the third and took to take home a 14-5 victory in the NAIA Region XII loser’s bracket final.

The 2007 Highland Cavaliers recorded the most season wins in school history of 32 and a season mark of 32-17-1. The Bulldogs (45-13) advance to the regional championship against Union College scheduled for a 1:00 p.m. start on Saturday.

UVA-Wise lined 13 hits with second baseman Edwin Narvaez (Morovis, PR), who doubled and scored once, accounting for three. John Bigley (Woodbridge, VA), who doubled, Jorge Laboy (Woodbridge, VA) and Mike Lang (Fredericksburg, VA) had two hits apiece. Andrew Anderson (Richmond, VA) doubled. Matt Hall (Hillsville, VA), Brad Robbins (Big Stone Gap, VA), Josh Verts (Winchester, VA), Brad Austin (Hillsville, VA) and Logan Limburg (Bristol, VA) produced one hit each.

The Bulldogs produced seven earned runs on five hits to bust in front 7-0 in the top of the second. In the home second, Narvaez singled and Anderson followed with a double. Alan Stoupa (McLean, VA) drove Narvaez in with a ground out for a 7-1 score.

Tennessee Wesleyan put the game virtually out of reach when Jered Stanley blasted a grand slam home run to straight away centerfield as part of a five run third, 12-1. The Bulldogs added a single score in the fourth.

The game remained 13-1 until the home eighth. Bigley sliced a run-scoring double and he was followed by run-producing singles back-to-back by Verts and Robbins as part of a four-run trip to the plate for a 13-5 tally. Tennessee Wesleyan added one more score in the top of the ninth for what would be a 14-5 fina.
