Wise, VA – The University of Virginia’s College at Wise baseball team opened its home baseball schedule in fine fashion by run-ruling Southern Virginia University by identical 13-1 scores in five innings. The Highland Cavaliers pounded out 24 hits while Matt Begley and Brad Robbins allowed just four hits in 10 innings of work on the mound.
Junior Matt Hall (Hillsville, VA) and sophomore Edwin Narvaez had two of the UVA-Wise (9-2-1) hot bats. Hall went five for seven with three runs and four rbi while Narvaez was four of six, a double, three runs and four rbi. John Bigley (Woodbridge, VA) laced two doubles on his 3 for 5 day with three runs scored and three batted in. Mike Lang had his best day of the season with three hits in four at bats including two infield hits in the same inning of game two.
Josh Verts (Winchester, VA) was two for three with a double, four runs and three drove in. Clay Christian (Wise, VA) had a good second game with two hits, two runs and three rbi. The trio of Jeremy Wright (Bristol, VA), Alan Stoupa (McLean, VA) and Brad Austin (Hillsville, VA) accounted for the team’s other three hits.
In the opener, Begley (Norton, VA) scattered two hits over four innings before allowing a run-scoring single in the top of the fifth to lose his shutout. The Highland Cavaliers jumped on the Knights (0-15) early in the opening frame. Hall and Laboy started the turn with singles before Narvaez drove both in with his own single to right field to spark a four-run inning.
After adding a single score in the third to make it 5-0, UVA-Wise plated eight more tallies in the bottom of the fourth with back-to-back doubles by Verts and Bigley driving in three runs between them for a 13-0 score. Southern Virginia added its lone score in the top of the fifth for a 13-1 final.
The second contest started slower but ended with the same. The Knights scored first in the top of the third. For the second time on the day, the Cavs broke out for eight runs in the bottom of the third. Bigley had his second two-bagger to drive in two runs and Lang produced two infield singles in the frame to make it 8-1.
Hall’s two-run single up the middle with the bases loaded capped a five-run fourth for a 13-1 victory in five innings. Robbins (Big Stone Gap, VA) allowed only two hits, one earned run and fanned seven to pick up his first win as a Cavs’ player.
UVA-Wise will now be off until hosting Covenant College for an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader starting at 12:00 noon Saturday afternoon.
