Franklin Springs, GA – Wild pitching cost UVA-Wise in the opener, 10-8, before the team run-ruled, 14-1, host Emmanuel College to split a baseball doubleheader Saturday afternoon.

The Highland Cavaliers’ sophomore Josh Verts ( Winchester, VA) continued his torrid pace at the plate for the weekend. Verts had four hits with three in the opener, a two-run homer and five rbi. Matt Hall ( Hillsville, VA) had three singles and drove in two runs while Brad Austin ( Hillsville, VA), his first collegiate start, went two for three in game two. Edwin Narvaez belted a two-run home run and Mike Lang ( Fredericksburg, VA) lined a two run triple in the late game. Andrew Anderson ( Richmond, VA) added two hits and Jorge Laboy ( Woodbridge, VA) had a two-run double in the opener. The Cavs had 23 hits in the 12 innings for the day.

In the opener, UVA-Wise (2-1) led 4-1 before Lang singled, Hall walked and Laboy drove them in with a double. Verts followed with a run-scoring single for a 7-1 lead heading to the bottom of the fourth.

Emmanuel (2-7) took advantage of wild UVA-Wise pitching which gave out nine free passes with five runs in the bottom of the fifth before adding two in each of the fifth and sixth to edge out a 10-8 win.

Brock Funk went the first four frames on the mound before Matt Sinnes took over in the fifth to suffer the defeat for the Cavs.

After a 1-1 first frame, UVA-Wise overmatched Emmanuel in the second contest. The Cavs produced four hits in a five-run second inning. In the third, Verts belted a two-run home run as UVA-Wise added four scores. Lang lined a two-run triple in the fourth before Narvaez popped a two-run homer in the fifth to complete the 14-1 win.

David Jones ( Amelia, VA) threw the first four innings before John Bigley ( Woodbridge, VA) worked the fifth on the mound for UVA-Wise.

The Cavs will now be off before heading to Georgia again for a three-game set starting next Friday at Toccoa Falls College.
