Toccoa Falls, GA – After scoring 36 runs in three games last weekend to open the season, the University of Virginia’s College at Wise continued its scoring binge by run-ruling Toccoa Falls, 12-1, in seven innings on Friday afternoon.

In the top of the first, Matt Hall (Hillsville, VA) led off the contest with a single and came home when Jorge Laboy (Woodbridge, VA) followed with a two-run homer. The second frame was scoreless before the Highland Cavaliers (3-1) slowly put the game away over the next four innings.

Laboy walked and scored on the team’s second two-run round-tripper off Josh Verts’ ( Winchester, VA) bat in the top of the third. Brock Funk (Fries, VA) and Andrew Anderson (Richmond, VA) hit back-to-back singles before both coming home on a two-run Jeremy Wright (Bristol, VA) base hit to make it 6-0. UVA-Wise added three runs in the fourth, two in the fifth and the final tally in the sixth for a 12-1 win in seven innings.

Verts posted his second quality start on the mound. The sophomore pitched five innings where he gave up four hits, one earned run and fanned three batters. He was also two for four with three rbi and the two-run homer. Hall had a solid day the plate by going three for five. Anderson, Wright, Edwin Narvaez and Alan Stoupa ( McLean, VA) lined two hits apiece in the 15 hit team effort. Laboy had the two-run home run and Funk had the final hit against Toccoa Falls (0-6).

Brad Robbins had two solid innings in relief to finish the game on the mound without allowing a hit and walking one.

UVA-Wise will continue its three-game series with Toccoa Falls in a twinbill starting at 12:00 p.m. Saturday.
