Cavs Dominate Eagles to Complete Weekend Sweep in the Snow

Toccoa Falls, GA – Amist constant snow flurries, the Highland Cavaliers completed a dominating weekend on the baseball diamond. UVA-Wise outscored host Toccoa Falls College 28-3 in three games as they swept a doubleheader, 3-1 and 13-1 on Saturday afternoon.

Jorge Laboy (Woodbridge, VA) and Josh Verts (Winchester, VA) combined to go nine for 13, four doubles, two home runs and five runs batted in to lead UVA-Wise (5-1) at the plate. Brock Funk (Fries, VA) and David Jones (Amelia, VA) picked up mound victories while John Bigley saved the first contest.

In the opener, Funk went the first four frames as he scattered two hits, one earned run and struck out five batters for his first win of the year. Bigley pitched a scoreless final three innings by allowing three hits and striking out two for the save. Verts was 3 for 4 with two doubles and two rbi while Laboy had two doubles of his own in four trips. Edwin Narvaez doubled while Matt Begley ( Norton, VA), Alan Stoupa (McLean, VA) and Mike Lang (Fredericksburg, VA) had one hit apiece.

Laboy and Verts lined back-to-back doubles for a single run in the third. After a tying run in the bottom of the second by Toccoa Falls (0-6), Narvaez doubled was sacrificed to second by Jeremy Wright (Bristol, VA) before Stoupa singled him in to make it 2-1. Verts lined a two out single to plate Lang, who singled, for the final run, 3-1, in the top of the seventh.

In the late contest, the Cavs scored early and often to run-rule their opponent for the fourth time in six games. Laboy walked and stole second before Andrew Anderson (Richmond, VA) drove him in with a two-run homer for a 2-0 first inning. Anderson had the big at bat in the second with a two-run double as part of a five run second, 7-0. Laboy connected for a two-run blast and Verts a solo round-tripper to lead to a five-run third before Narvaez added a solo homer in the fourth to lead to the 13-1 five inning win.

Jones went the distance on the mound. He gave up three hits, one earned run and three walks while striking out nine to improve to 2-0 on the year. Anderson, Laboy, Verts and Bigley had two hits while Lang and Brad Robbins had singles.

UVA-Wise will now be off until playing a non-conference twinbill at Virginia Intermont on Thursday afternoon starting at 1:00 p.m.
