Game 2 Boxscore

Bristol, VA – The UVA-Wise Highland Cavaliers baseball team produced a combined shutout, 3-0, before playing to a nine inning tie, 5-5, suspended due to darkness with the Virginia Intermont Cobras on Thursday.

UVA-Wise (6-1-1) received a near perfect day at the plate from sophomore Edwin Narvaez, who went seven for eight with a double and two rbi. Freshman Alan Stoupa (McLean, VA) belted his first collegiate homer and had three hits. Matt Hall (Hillsville, VA) and Jeremy Wright (Bristol, VA) produced three hits apiece in the two games while Brock Funk (Fries, VA) had a rbi double.

On the mound, Matt Begley (Norton, VA) and Funk combined for the 3-0 shutout in the opener. Begley 1-0) worked the first five frames where he allowed one hit, walked two and fanned four hitters. Funk worked the final two innings where he struck out two and gave up one hit for his first collegiate save.

In the first inning with two outs, Narvaez singled home Josh Verts (Winchester, VA) before Funk lined a two-bagger to score Narvaez to make it 2-0. Stoupa drove the ball over the left field fence for a solo homer to make it 3-0 which would stand the final five and half innings due to the Cavs’ pitching duo.

Virginia Intermont (2-6-1) took an early lead in the second game with a run in the first and a pair in the second for a 3-0 advantage. Wright put UVA-Wise on the board with a single to plate Narvaez, who doubled in Verts to pull within 3-2.

After the Cavs took a 4-3 in the top of the fifth, the Cobras edged back in front with their own pair of tallies to make it 5-4. Hall drove in Wright in the top of the sixth to tie the contest at 5-5.

UVA-Wise missed opportunities to win the game in each of the next three innings. The Cavs missed a suicide bunt in the seventh, left runners on second and third in the eighth and squandered runners on first and second with no out the top of the ninth before the game was called for darkness.

The Cavs will next open their home season with a twinbill against West Virginia Tech starting at 1:00 p.m. on Sunday at Stallard Field.
