Four Cavs Picked VaSID College Division All-State Baseball

Newport News, Va. – The UVa-Wise quartet of Brad Robbins, Josh Verts, John Bigley and Edwin Narvaez were picked for the Virginia Sports Information Directors (VaSID) College Division All-State baseball honors. Robbins, Verts and Bigley made the first team while Narvaez garnered second team honors.

The four Cavs helped UVa-Wise to a record-setting 32 victories (32-17-1) and first trip to the NAIA Region XII playoffs for the first time in five years.

Catcher Matt Hudgins of Virginia Wesleyan and Andrew Chrismer from Bridgewater were voted as the Player of the Year and Rookie of the Year. Ferrum’s Abe Naff received the Coach of the Year award.

Designated hitter Robbins and outfielder Verts continued their diamond awards for the 2007 season. Both Cavaliers were NAIA All-Region XII and All-Appalachian Athletic Conference selections.

Robbins (Big Stone Gap, Va.) led the AAC and third in the NAIA with a .479 batting average and a .923 slugging percentage. The sophomore belted 10 homers and 37 rbi while going 4-3 with 41 strikeouts on the mound.

Verts had an impressive season at the plate as well. He hit .413 with a team best 18 doubles and 45 rbi while hitting nine round-tripper. The sophomore from Winchester, Va. went 18 of 33 (.545) in the AAC and NAIA Region games to end the season. Verts also went 3-1 with a 2.90 ERA on the mound.

First baseman Bigley was the final all-state first teamer. The junior from Woodbridge, Va. received his second award after being an All-AAC honorable mention pick. Bigley hit .424, 13 doubles, four home runs and 32 runs batted in with a solid .992 fielding percentage in 247 chances. He also was the team’s top relief pitcher going 2-0 with a 2.28 ERA with 19 strikeouts in 23.2 innings.

Edwin Narvaez was the final UVa-Wise players to be honored with a place on the all-state second team. The second-year second baseman hit .370 with 60 hits and four home runs in 162 at bats while driving home 33 runners. The Morovis, Puerto Rico native posted a 14-game hit streak to start the 2007 baseball season.

All-State teams are selected by active members of the Virginia Sports Information Directors Association.
