Emory, Va. – Brad Robbins and Alan Stoupa powered the UVa-Wise offense with three homers, a double and eight hits to help sweep host Emory & Henry, 11-10 and 7-3, in a Thursday baseball twinbill.
The Highland Cavaliers (6-7) saw Robbins (Big Stone Gap, Va.) post a six for seven day with two homers and a double while picking up the opening game victory on the hill. Stoupa (McLean, Va.) showed his biggest power day of his just over one year collegiate career with a solo home run in each game. Matt Hall (Hillsville, Va.) added a pair of doubles while Scott Cole (Stuart, Va.) picked up his first college win with an impressive five frames in game two.
Game 1
After two scoreless frames, UVa-Wise scored five tallies in the top of the third to break onto the board. Robbins belted a two-run homer and later saw Stoupa drive his own solo shot over the fence.
The Wasps (4-10) chipped away with single scores in both the third and fourth to make it 5-2. In the top of the fifth, Jorge Laboy (Woodbridge, Va.) singled and Robbins doubled. Edwin Narvaez singled to plate Laboy before Adam Skoranski drew a walk. Mike Lang (Fredericksburg, Va.) and Hall laced back-to-back two-run doubles for the second five-run trip to the plate for a 10-2 score.
Emory & Henry battled back with four runs in fifth to make it 10-6. Robbins connected for his second round-tripper in the top of the sixth which proved to be the game-winner for the Cavs. The Wasps added another four runs in the sixth but fell one short to lose 11-10.
Robbins was a perfect four for four with the two homers, double and three rbi. Luis Roa, Narvaez and Lang all three had two hits. Jonathan Painter (Stephens City, Va.) came on to finish the fifth inning before Brandon Horton (Hillsville, Va.) picked up his first save of the season.
Game 2
Matt Duffy (Martinsville, Va.) started the game off fast for UVa-Wise with a two-run triple. Stoupa hit his second solo shot in the second for a 3-0 Cavs lead.
The Wasps scored one time in the third against Cavs’ starter Cole but was all they would mount against him. UVa-Wise outscored Emory & Henry 4-2 over the final three innings to complete the sweep by a 7-3 tally.
Robbins, Hall and Skoranski had two hits apiece with Hall have his second double.
Cole went five innings for the win where he allowed just one earned run, walked four and fanned six.
