UVa-Wise Earns Diamond Split at Emmanuel

Franklin Springs, Ga. – After a solid Friday night season opener, UVa-Wise earned a Saturday split to finish the three-game series.  The Cavs’ John Bigley belted a two-run homer and Edwin Narvaez had three hits with a solo homer for a 10-6 victory in game one before the Lions roared back for an 18-4 win in the late contest.

Bigley (Woodbridge, Va.) connected for his two-run homer in the sixth as part of two hits in the first game.  Edwin Narvaez hit his own solo shot in the opener as part of a three-hit game.  Matt Duffy (Martinsville, Va.) had his second good game with three hits while Luis Roa lined a two-run triple in game one and two hits with a double in the late game.  Jorge Laboy (Woodbridge, Va.) added three hits with a double and Matt Hall (Hillsville, Va.) two.  David Jones picked up the mound win in the first contest where he went four frames and allowed just two runs.

After leading 3-2 in three innings, Narvaez lined his solo home run in the top of the fourth.  The Cavs (2-1) added three scores in the fifth before Bigley two-run round-tripper in the sixth for a 10-5 tally.  Emmanuel (3-5) was able to plate a single run in the home sixth for the 10-6 final.

UVa-Wise started the second game where it left off in the first.  The Cavs pushed across three runs to open the game and added a fourth in the top of the second for the 4-0 score. 

Trailing 4-1 in the bottom of the third, Emmanuel broke the game wide open with an astounding 13 runs in the trip to the plate to take command 14-4.  The home team added four more tallies in the fourth and held UVa-Wise scoreless for the 18-4 win in five innings.

The Cavs will now be off until traveling for a Saturday and Sunday three-game series on February 16 and 17 at Berry College in Mount Berry, Ga.
