Cobras Bite Cavs in Baseball Sweep

Bristol, Va. – Virginia Intermont pushed home runs in nine of 14 innings to bite UVa-Wise in an Appalachian Athletic Conference baseball sweep. The Cobras tallied three unearned runs in the home eighth of an 11-8 win before scoring five runs in the first of the late game in an 8-2 victory over the Cavs.
Alan Stoupa (McLean, Va.) and Edwin Narvaez was the top UVa-Wise (10-11/5-3 AAC) hitters with four hits apiece. Stoupa had a double in each game while Narvaez had one. Mike Lang (Fredericksburg, Va.) produced four singles to continue his hot hitting. Brad Robbins (Big Stone Gap, Va.) and Josh Verts (Winchester, Va.) had two singles.
Game 1
Virginia Intermont (12-16/3-5 AAC) scored in each of the first four innings to lead 6-1. UVa-Wise clawed back into the game with a pair of runs in the fifth, 6-3. After two singles and a walk, Lang drew a bases loaded free pass as part a second two run frame for a 6-5 score.
The Cobras battled back with its own pair in the home sixth and added the game-deciding three unearned runs in the bottom of the eighth to go out to an 11-6 tally. The Cavs amounted two runs in the top of the ninth but was not enough to fall 11-8.
Game 2
Virginia Intermont came out of the gate quickly with five runs in the bottom of the first. After two hits, UVa-Wise rececived a run-scoring ground out by Brad Austin ( Hillsville, Va.) and Lang sliced a rbi single to make it 5-2.
The Cobras would add insurance runs an insurance run in the fourth and two more in the sixth for the 8-2 final score to complete the Saturday sweep.
