Wise, Va. – After 52 runs and 61 hits, UVa-Wise took one of the two slugfest games of the doubleheader against visiting Southern Virginia on Thursday afternoon. Adam Skoranski’s grand slam keyed a seven-run second as part of the Highland Cavaliers 16-8 opening win while the Knights plated two sixth inning runs for the 15-13 late game victory.

Matt Duffy (Martinsville, Va.) had a hot hitting day by going six of nine, three hits in each game, with a double, three-run homer and four rbi for UVa-Wise (11-13). Brad Robbins (Big Stone Gap, Va.) added five hits with two doubles and a triple. Brad Ricker (Bristol, Va.) laced four singles and stole three bases.

Game 1

The Knights (10-14) came out with hot bats by scoring twice in the first and fourth in the second to lead 6-0. The advantage would not last long. Josh Verts (Winchester, Va.), who was three for four in the game, doubled, Duffy singled and Edwin Narvaez reached on an error to load the bases to set up the line drive round-tripper by Skoranski to cut it to 6-4. The rally did not stop as Ricker had a bunt single, Mike Lang (Fredericksburg, Va.) walked and Brad Austin (Hillsville, Va.) had his own bunt single to reload the bases. Robbins sliced a three-run triple to clear them to go in front, 7-6.

Both teams scored once in the third and Southern Virginia tied it at 9-9 in the top of the fifth. In the home fifth, Laboy belted a two-run home run and three others had rbi singles as part of a five-run at bat for the 14-9 lead. The Cavs added three more insurance runs in the sixth for the 16-8 final.

Austin singled three times and Lang twice. Seth Frisby picks up his first win of the year by allowing just one run in 2 2/3 innings.

Game 2

The second game turned in even larger numbers. UVa-Wise plated three runs in the bottom of the first. Southern Virginia answered with the biggest outburst of the day with eight runs. The visitors took advantage of three Cavs’ miscues and received a Grant Woods solo homer for an 8-3 score.

The Knights increased the margin to 10-3 before the Cavs saw three runners cross home to cut it to 10-6 after three innings.

The visitors pushed back with a trio more runs in the fourth, 13-6. In the home half with two outs, Robbins doubled and John Bigley (Woodbridge, Va.) walked. Duffy came to the plate to blast a three-run homer which was followed by a solo shot from Narvaez to make it 13-10. UVa-Wise went back to work in the fifth with another three scores to tie the game, 13-13.

With two outs and two on base, SVU’s Michel Lara lined a two-run single down the left field line for what would be the deciding tallies. Logan Mann held the Cavs scoreless over the final two frames for the 15-13 win.

UVa-Wise will next host the NAIA’s seventh-ranked Tennesse Wesleyan for an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader Saturday starting at 1:00 p.m.
