Game 2 Boxscore

Wise, Va. – Edwin Narvaez two-home run and five rbi first game helped UVa-Wise earn a baseball split against seventh-ranked Tennessee Wesleyan Saturday afternoon. The Narvaez effort and gutty pitching by Brock Funk lead to an 8-6 victory before the visiting Bulldogs scored three sixth frame tallies for a 6-3 late victory.

Narvaez added a deep sac fly to the warning track in center for his fifth rbi after the two two-run homers for the Highland Cavaliers (12-14/6-4 Appalachian Athletic Conference). Matt Duffy (Martinsville, Va.), who doubled twice, and Brad Austin (Hillsville, Va.) both had three hits. Brad Robbins (Big Stone Gap, Va.) bashed his seventh home run and singled with Mike Lang (Fredericksburg, Va.), Luis Roa and Josh Verts (Winchester, Va.) singled twice apiece. Jorge Laboy (Woodbridge, Va.) sliced a double.

The Bulldogs day was highlighted by shortstop Vladimir Frias. He hit for the cycle in the opener and went six of eight on the afternoon with five rbi.

Game 1

Tied 1-1 in the bottom of the fourth, Narvaez drove home Verts, who walked, with a round-tripper to right field. Tennessee Wesleyan (26-10/8-2) rallied for two runs in the top of the fifth to retie the game, 3-3.

The Bulldogs edged ahead with a single run in the sixth. Narvaez struck again with a long two-run home run to straight away center field for a 5-4 tally. Tennessee Wesleyan plated an unearned run in the top of the seventh to tie the contest for a third time, 5-5.

In the home seventh, Verts singled home Laboy and Duffy drove in Robbins on a fielder’s choice. Narvaez finished his big game with a deep sac fly for an 8-5 score heading into the ninth.

Funk gritted out the final three outs by allowing just one run and getting the last batter to ground out to first. The senior posted the complete game where he fanned six to even his mark to 3-3.

Game 2

Trailing 2-1 in the fourth, UVa-Wise received a home run just inside the right field foul pole by Robbins to tie the contest.

The score remained 2-2 until the top of the sixth. After fouling off three 3-2 pitches, Frias snuck a bases-clearing double past first base for a 5-2 lead.

The Cavs received an rbi double in the home sixth by Duffy. Tyler Moyneur answered with a solo home run in the top of the seventh for Tennessee Wesleyan before Jon Swartout blanked UVa-Wise in the home at bat for the 6-3 final.

UVa-Wise will now be off until traveling to former AAC member Brevard College for a Wednesday doubleheader starting at 1:00 p.m.
