Duffy Drives in Winning Runs to Aid Cavs Baseball Sweep of Tornados

Brevard, N.C. – Junior Matt Duffy lined a run-scoring single in the top of the seventh for a 6-5 UVa-Wise opening win before he lined a two-run hit in the a three-run first frame for a 4-2 second victory over host Brevard College on Wednesday afternoon.
Duffy (Martinsville, Va.) finished the day with four hits and four rbi in the twinbill for the Cavs (14-14). Brad Robbins (Big Stone Gap, Va.) and Jorge Laboy (Woodbridge, Va.) recorded three hits with a double apiece. Edwin Narvaez added a double and single in the opener.
UVa-Wise received strong pitching performances be freshmen D’Andre Bussey (Va. Beach, Va.) and Scott Cole (Stuart, Va.). Bussey covered the first five innings before Josh Verts (Winchester, Va.) took care of the final two innings where he allowed just one hit for the win. Cole went six innings for the second game win before Brock Funk (Fries, Va.) picked up a perfect seventh for his second save.
Game 1
Trailing 4-0, Brevard (9-25) put together a five-run home fifth to edge ahead 5-4. The Tornados lead did not last long. With the base loaded, Luis Roa drew a rbi walk to tie the game in the top of the sixth.
Laboy led off the visiting seventh with a double and came home three batters later when Duffy lined a single for the game-deciding run to pull in front, 6-5. Verts kept the lead in the bottom of the seventh for the win.
Game 2
UVa-Wise wasted no time to score all it needed in the second contest. The Cavs saw Mike Lang (Fredericksburg, Va.) and Laboy start the game with walks. After one out, Robbins singled in one runner and later stole second. Duffy stepped to the plate for a two-run hit of his own to open a 3-0 advantage.
The visitors added a single tally in the top of the third before Cole allowed the only two Brevard runs for the game in the sixth. Funk came in to record a perfect bottom of the seventh for the save and 4-2 win.
Cole fanned seven batters while allowing six hits, two earned runs and two walks on the day.
UVa-Wise will return home for a Thursday doubleheader starting at 4:30 p.m. against Alice Lloyd College.
