Wise, Va. – Brad Austin is taking a liking to being moved into the leadoff spot for the Highland Cavaliers. The sophomore went three for four in both games with a triple, four runs and three rbi to help UVa-Wise sweep Emory & Henry College, 8-2 and 10-4, in baseball action Wednesday.
Austin (Hillsville, Va.) produced his most hits of his two-year career with the six hits and is now 12 for 28 in seven games as the UVa-Wise (20-17) lead-off hitter. Catcher Adam Skoranski (Cheyenne, Wyo.) lined two hits in each game including a solo homer. Jorge Laboy (Woodbridge, Va.) added three hits with a double and four rbi. John Bigley (Woodbridge, Va.) lined three singles in the second contest.
Emory & Henry (7-30) receive four hits and a home run by Codie Mitchell. Bucky Mann hit a solo home run in the first contest.
Game 1
Austin led off the home first with a single, stole second and Laboy drove him home on a hard single to start a three-run at bat. Brad Robbins (Big Stone Gap, Va.) had a run-scoring single and Matt Duffy ( Martinsville, Va.) a sac fly to put the Cavs in front 3-0 and would never be challenged.
The Wasps scored once in the top of the fifth before Austin singled and Laboy drove him home a second time to start a second three-score frame to increase the difference to 6-1. Mann homered for Emory & Henry in the sixth but Skoranski answered for UVa-Wise in the bottom of the frame for what would eventually be an 8-2 final.
D’Andre Bussey ( Va. Beach, Va.) sent down the first 13 visiting batters for UVa-Wise. The freshman allowed just two hits and one earned run with six strikeouts in five innings to improve to 2-2.
Game 2
Austin and Laboy singled and doubled before scoring to make it 2-0 Cavs after one. Emory & Henry pulled ahead 3-2 with a trio of scores in the second.
Tied 4-4 heading into the home third, UVa-Wise received a two-run single to left from Edwin Narvaez as part of a five-run trip to the plate to break open the contest, 9-4. Duffy and Skoranski both doubled in the fourth for the contest’s final run for the 10-4 tally.
The Cavs will stay at home for a 4:00 p.m. doubleheader against Pikeville College on Thursday afternoon.
