Cavs Major in Extra Base Hits to Run-Rule Eagles Twice

Wise, Va. – UVa-Wise majored in extra base hits with 14 to run-rule Alice Lloyd College twice on Wednesday. The Highland Cavaliers took care of the Eagles, 11-1 in six innings and 12-1 over five frames in the sweep.

Luis Roa, Brad Robbins (Big Stone Gap, Va.) and Adam Skoranski (Cheyenne, Wyo.) all produced three extra base hits apiece for the Cavs (24-19). Roa had a cycle over the two contests with a solo homer, two run triple, rbi double and a single. Robbins belted his 11 th homer, a two-run shot, and a pair of doubles in the opener and singled in the second. Skoranski doubled and singled in game one before tripling in game two with four rbi.

Jorge Laboy (Woodbridge, Va.) lined three singles and Matt Hall (Hillsville, Va.) added a hit in their final home game.

Matt Duffy (Martinsville, Va.) added a two-run home run, a double and a run-scoring single. Edwin Narvaez singled and hit a two-run home run. Mike Lang (Fredericksburg, Va.) completed the team’s five home runs with a three-run round-tripper. Brad Austin (Hillsville, Va.) doubled and singled while Seth Radcliff (Palmyra, Va.) and Brad Ricker (Bristol, Va.) had one hit each.

Game 1

After a scoreless first, the Cavs did not fail to score again in an at bat the rest of the night. In the second, Narvaez single and Robbins doubled and both scored on a two-bagger by Skoranski for the opening scores. Austin finished the four-run inning with a sac fly.

UVa-Wise slowly tacked on runs in the third through sixth. Skoranski had a two-run triple in the third and Roa had his first homer in the fourth. Robbins connected for a two-run home run in the fifth before Roa tripled home the needed last two runs for the 11-1 final in six innings.

Robbins (3-2) allowed just two hits, walked two and struck out five over 4.1 innings for the win on the mound. Josh Verts (Winchester, Va.) posted a scoreless final 1.2 innings in relief.

Game 2

The Cavs scored in each turn at the plate in the late game. Duffy and Narvaez smacked two-run homer apiece as part of a five-run home first.

Duffy added a rbi single in the second while Hall and Laboy contributed run-scoring singles in the third to make it 8-1 over Alice Lloyd (9-28-1). For the final scores of the night in the bottom of the fourth, Lang hit a three-run homer to right before Roa doubled home Austin for what would be a 12-1 final in five frames.

Freshman Preston Smith (2-1) allowed just two hits, an earned run, one walk and fanned four over three innings for the win. Relievers Matt Begley (Norton, Va.), who made his final appearance at Stallard Field, and Scott Cole (Stuart, Va.) both pitched one scoreless inning.

UVa-Wise completes it regular season with an Appalachian Athletic Conference doubleheader at Bryan College Saturday at 1:00 p.m.
