April 30, 2008
BOXSCORE

Kingsport, Tenn. – Trailing by a run in the bottom of the ninth, Jorge Laboy and Matt Duffy lined back-to-back run-scoring singles to help UVa-Wise prevail over Montreat College, 6-5, in the first round of the Appalachian Athletic Conference tournament.

The Highland Cavaliers (27-19) will move on to face the AAC’s regular season champ Tennessee Wesleyan in a 12:00 p.m. contest on Thursday back at Hunter-Wright Stadium. Montreat (36-17) will play Bryan in a 9:00 p.m. game at King College.

Duffy produced four hits in five at bats with a double, two runs and three rbi. Laboy added three hits of his own with one rbi. Josh Verts lined a double and single while Mike Lang singled two times. Brad Robbins recorded one hit and drove in two runs. Brad Austin and Luis Roa lined one hit.

In the home first, Duffy ground out to second to plate Roa, who had singled, for the game’s first run. The Cavs added a second tally in the fourth on a rbi hit from Robbins to score Duffy for a 2-0 advantage.

After a scoreless fifth, Montreat produced six consecutive hits with one out to score four runs to lead 4-2. David Jones came in to relieve D’Andre Bussey, who had fired five shutout frames, to entice two outs to end the half inning.

Duffy scored UVa-Wise’s third run in the sixth on a Robbins ground out and tied the game and drove home Roa to tie the game, 4-4, in the seventh.

Montreat’s Cam Duckworth started the eighth with a double past third base and put his team back on top on a passed ball.

Lang and Austin started the ninth with singles. Roa was hit by a pitch to load the bases with no outs. Laboy tied the game with a single after a Montreat pitching change. Duffy gave the Cavs the win on a single to plate Austin for the 6-5 victory.
