Berry Early Runs Takes Rusty UVa-Wise Diamond Team

Mount Berry, Ga. – After being relegated to the indoors all week, the rusty UVa-Wise baseball saw Berry scores early runs before taking a 9-2 Friday victory.
Edwin Narvaez and Matt Duffy (Martinsville, Va.) lined two hits apiece of the six Highland Cavaliers (2-2) on the afternoon. Narvaez had a run-scoring double while Duffy scored both of the squad’s runs. Josh Verts (Winchester, Va.) and Matt Hall (Hillsville, Va.) had singles. Junior reliever Brandon Horton (Hillsville, Va.) had a strong 3 1/3 innings where he allowed just one hit, one earned run and fanned two without a walk.
The Vikings (5-0) took advantage of some early Cavs’ miscues and Brad Robbins struggling on the mound for two runs in each of the first two frames. Narvaez laced a run-scoring double in the top of the fifth to make it 4-1.
Berry answered the one visitor tally with four runs in the home fifth to break open the contest, 8-1. The home team added a final score in the home seventh. Duffy scored the second and final UVa-Wise run in the top of the ninth but was not enough as the team fell 9-2.
The two teams will return to action for a 12:00 p.m twinbill on Saturday afternoon.
