GAME 2 BOXSCORE
Mount Berry, Ga. – Berry College scored in the opener and posted a late four-run frame in the late contest to record the three-game sweep of UVa-Wise in baseball Saturday afternoon. The Highland Cavaliers outhit the Vikings in both games with three doubles by Brad Robbins but fell 6-3 and 8-5.
Robbins (Big Stone Gap, Va.) lined three two-baggers as part of his four hits on the day with two rbi. Luis Roa record two hits in the opener and three singles in the late game with two runs and an rbi. Edwin Narvaez had a three for three game two while Matt Duffy (Martinsville, Va.) drove in three runs with two singles in the first affair.
Game 1
Duffy lined a single to drive home both Roa and Matt Hall ( Hillsville, Va.), who both singled, for a 2-0 led after a half inning. Berry (7-0) answered with a pair of scores to tie the game in the home half of the first and added four more in the second for a 6-2 lead.
Josh Verts ( Winchester, Va.) lined a one-out hit and came around to score on Duffy’s second rbi hit to pull UVa-Wise (2-4) within 6-3 in the top of the third. Both team’s pitchers took over from that point and shut down the offenses for the 6-3 final.
David Jones ( Amelia, Va.) and Brock Funk (Fries, Va.) scattered five hits and worked three innings apiece but saw the Cavs’ defense commit four costly errors.
Game 2
Robbins doubled and scored in the second and doubled home two tallies in the third for a 3-1 visitor lead. Funk, who singled, came home on a wild pitch and Roa knocked in Adam Skoranki ( Cheyenne, Wyo.), who had two hits, to increase the lead to 5-1 in the fourth.
Berry pushed across one run in the fourth and two more in the fifth to tighten the contest to 6-5. In the home sixth, Patrick Taylor singled with the bases loaded to give the Vikings a 7-5 lead. After a strike out, Mitch Terry blooped a single to shallow center to make it 8-5.
In the top of the seventh, Billy Fox ( Chincoteague, Va.) was hit by the pitch to start the at bat for the Cavs. He moved to second but the final Logan Tunnello fanned the final two UVa-Wise batters to get the save and 8-5 final for Berry.
D'Andre Bussey started and went the first four innings on the mound. Scott Cole picked up the loss after allowing five runs over 1.1 innings after Bussey. Verts and Jonathan Painter manned the sixth on the hill.
