Highland Cavaliers Split Two Sunday Baseball Contests

Columbia, Ky. – After a second weekend tough one run defeat, 4-3, to Campbellsville, UVa-Wise battled back for the Sunday baseball split by taking Lindsey Wilson, 8-5, in the late affair.
In the two games, Mike Lang (Fredericksburg, Va.) lined three hits including a solo homer to pace the Highland Cavaliers (3-6). Brad Robbins (Big Stone Gap, Va.) added a solo homer and Matt Duffy (Martinsville, Va.) a three-run triple to highlight the offensive output. Freshman D’Andre Bussey (Va. Beach, Va.) recorded his first collegiate mound win the second game.
Game 1
The Tigers (3-1) started quickly in the home first with two runs and never trailed the whole game. Lang blasted a solo round-tripper for the Cavs in the top of the second to make it 2-1.
Both teams scored single tallies in the fifth before UVa-Wise tied the game, 3-3, with another single score in the visitors’ sixth. Campbellsville saw its lead-off batter be hit by UVa-Wise’s Funk, who came on in the sixth in relief. The Tiger was sacrificed to second on a bunt and scored on the next hitter’s single for the 4-3 final.
Funk saw his record even to 1-1 after he relieved starter David Jones, who went five innings. UVa-Wise did outhit Campbellsville six to four.
Game 2
Tied 1-1, the Cavs exploded for a big six-run second to propel them for the late game win. In the second, Narvaez singled and Adam Skoranski doubled to start the offense. Roa lined a run-scoring single and Matt Hall drove in another run on a fielder’s choice. Robbins added a rbi on an infield single before Duffy cleared the loaded bases with a three-run triple to make it 7-1.
Lindsey Wilson (4-2) answered with one run in the home second and cut the difference to 8-4 with two tallies in the fifth. Funk allowed one final Blue Raider score in the seventh but no more to pick up the save and end the game 8-5.
Robbins connected on his second homer of the year with a solo shot and was two for four. Skoranski had his second two hit game with a double. Duffy and Hall had a triple and double as extra base hits. Roa , Narvaez and Lang finished the nine Cavs’ hits. Brandon Horton logged two middle relief frames while Bussey garnered the victory over the first four innings.
UVa-Wise will now be off until hosting King College next Saturday to open Appalachian Athletic Conference play in a twinbill starting at 12:00 p.m.
