Kingsport, Tenn. – Designated hitter Brad Robbins highlighted the three All-Appalachian Athletic Conference baseball selections for UVa-Wise announced on the first day of the league tournament. Robbins earned his second appearance in two years on the first team while Jorge Laboy garnered his third second team spot and Matt Duffy was an honorable mention pick.
The trio helped the Highland Cavaliers pull out a 6-5 victory over 21 st-ranked Montreat College in the opening round of the AAC tournament on Wednesday. The three players combined for eight of the team’s 14 hits including the game-tying and game-winning singles from Laboy and Duffy.
A NAIA preseason All-American, Robbins had posted a .385 average with 14 doubles, 11 homers, 40 rbi and a .699 slugging percentage on the year. The sophomore from Big Stone Gap, Va. stands at 3-2 on the mound in 36.2 innings including on shutout.
Laboy ( Woodbridge, Va.) makes his third appearance on the All-AAC second team. The senior shortstop leads UVa-Wise with a .433 average, 61 hits, 49 runs and nine stolen bases. He rounds out his figures with 10 doubles, four homers and 38 rbi.
Duffy of Martinsville, Va. has been hotter than any hitter on the Cavs to help earn the honorable mention status. The junior first baseman/third baseman has raised his average to .403 but more importantly is on pace to shatter the school’s runs batted in record. His 53 rbi are just eight away from breaking Steve Tyler’s 2002 total of 60. Duffy has 60 hits, 15 doubles, three triples and three triples to add to his credit.
