Cavs Slip Out of Postseason with 10-inning Defeat
May 3, 2004
JOHNSON CITY, TN - UVa-Wise dropped out of postseason contention Monday after losing a heartbreaking 2-1, 10-inning decision to Bryan (Tenn.) College in an Appalachian Athletic Conference play-in game at Cardinal Park in Johnson City, Tenn.
The Lions' Brett Williams smacked a long double off the top of the left-field wall in the bottom of the 10th that scored Luke Peters from second to give Bryan the win.
The Cavaliers trailed 1-0 in the top of the ninth, but evened the score at 1-1 on an RBI single from Jason Matlock, who was facing two outs and a 3-2 count when he delivered the big hit down the left-field line.
Brandon Bates went the distance on the mound and suffered the loss for UVa-Wise. Bates, who two-hit the Lions just last week, allowed the two runs Monday on just five hits.
Taylor Hasty picked up the victory for Bryan, tossing 10 innings and allowing seven UVa-Wise hits.
The loss ends the UVa-Wise baseball season with a 13-22-1 record.
Meanwhile, Bryan dropped out of conference competition later Monday with a 13-6 loss to Virginia Intermont College in round two of the play-in games.
Virginia Intermont moves on to become the eighth seed in the AAC tournament and will play No. 1 Brevard (N.C.) College Tuesday night.
