Cavaliers slither by Cobras for three-game sweep
March 26, 2005
WISE, Va. -- UVa-Wise slugged its way back into the Appalachian Athletic Conference race with a three-game sweep over league and regional rival Virginia Intermont College this weekend at Stallard Field.
The Cavaliers, now 8-13 overall and 4-6 in the AAC, topped the Cobras 8-6 in Friday’s nine-inning opener, and then took Saturday’s doubleheader by scores of 9-4 and 4-3. The two teams played seven innings in both games of the doubleheader.
After trailing 5-3 after five and a half innings in Friday’s game, the Cavaliers battled back in the bottom of the fifth to tie the score at 5, and then tallied three more in the bottom of the seventh to secure the win. Senior Josh Duffy’s (Ridgeway, Va./Magna Vista High) RBI double in the seventh proved to be the winning hit.
Freshman Mike Elliott (Huddleston, Va./Staunton River High) threw to only four batters, but earned the win. Closer Chris Tenney (Virginia Beach, Va./Kellam High) got the save.
Freshman outfielder Jayson Beck (Stafford, Va./Brooke Point High) led UVa-Wise at the plate with a 2-for-3, three-RBI performance.
Senior Courtney Nowlin (Stuart, Va./Patrick County High) nearly went the distance in Saturday’s double dip opener, tossing six and two-thirds innings and striking out eight Cobras for the win. Freshman Brandon Horton (Hillsville, Va./Carroll County High) pitched to one batter to finish the game.
Will Childress (Huddleston, Va./Potomac State Community College) had a tremendous day at the plate, going 4-for-4 with a couple of doubles, two runs, two RBI and a stolen base in game one.
Childress, who’s hitting .556 for the season, carried his hot bat over to nightcap where he had three singles and a run scored. Nowlin, Jason Matlock (Damascus, Va./Holston High) and Justin Nixon (Coeburn, Va./Coeburn High) each had two hits for the Cavaliers.
Clay Salyer (Hazard, Ky./Hazard High) pitched five and two-thirds for the win, and Tenney recorded his second save of the weekend.
UVa-Wise had been scheduled to play a doubleheader at Stallard Field Monday against AAC foe Tennessee Wesleyan College, but rain in Wise forced postponement. No make-up date has been set.
