Bulldogs Bite Cavs in Second Half

Wise, VA – A tale of two halves with Union College excelling when it counted to defeat the University of Virginia’s College at Wise men’s basketball team. The Bulldogs busted out of the gate from the intermission to win going away, 71-54, over the Highland Cavaliers.
Trailing 30-21 at the half, Union tied the contest over the opening six minutes of the second half, 38-38. The Bulldogs were not done as they went on a 23-2 run in the next seven and a half minutes to take command 61-40 with 6:44 left to go. UVa-Wise could not get back in the contest in the final six minutes to fall 71-54.
Kris Mills led the Union attack with 16 points to help the team improve to 8-2 and 3-0 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. Center Chris Mullins went a perfect six of six from the floor for 15 points and grabbed a team-high eight rebounds. Jerrod Gibbons added 13 points and Ryne Bretz had 11.
The Cavs fell to 4-6 overall and 1-3 in the conference. Jarred Soles was the lone double figure scorer with 17 points. Zydrunnas Rackauskas added eight points and eight boards. Justin Sorensen chipped in seven tallies off the bench.
UVa-Wise will take on their second and third NCAA Division I opponents this weekend. The Cavs will face VMI Friday night before playing Wofford College on Saturday afternoon.
