UVa-Wise Prevails Over So. Va. in OT

Bristol, TN– In the men's basketball season opener, Carlos Goodwyn and C.J. Crowder sank free throws and the defense held on the final possession as the Univeristy of Virginia's College at Wise prevailed over Southern Virginia. The Highland Cavaliers recorded the 73-71 win.
Sophomore Jared Soles paced the UVa-Wise offense with 25 points while senior Parker Gemmell pumped in 18 tallies. Crowder added seven points and hit double figures in rebounds with 12.
With the game tied 71-71, Goodwyn and Crowder hit one free throw apiece to go ahead 73-71 with 31 seconds left. Southern Virginia was able to get one last shot off but UVa-Wise pulled down the rebound to finish off the victory.
After a slow starting first half, the Cavs built a seven-point halftime advantage of 29-22. The lead edged to 10 points with just over 13 minutes left in the game.
The Knights chipped away at the deficit with free throws and some key three-pointers and eventually went ahead by a point. Southern Virginia led 63-61 with 25 seconds left in the game before Gemmell was fouled with eight tenths of a second in the game. Gemmell stepped up and hit both foul shots to tie the game, 63-63, and send it into overtime.
Southern Virginia led by as many as three points in the extra period before Crowder led a tough UVa-Wise defense to key the win.
UVa-Wise will now face host King College in the tournament championship set for 4:00 p.m. on Saturday. |
