Wise, Va. – The Highland Cavaliers used good defense and rebounding to take a low-scoring men’s basketball contest Saturday night. The University of Virginia’s College at Wise outrebounded Brevard College 44-32 and rode its defense to the 55-45 win.

The Cavs completed its four-game homestand 3-1 over the past two weeks. UVa-Wise improved to 8-13 and 4-8 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. Brevard College remained at the bottom of the league at 2-10 and 4-17 on the year.

Parker Gemmell and Jarred Soles were the night’s top scorers. Gemmell dropped in a game-high 18 points and grabbed six rebounds. Soles hit five three-pointers on his way to a 17-point effort. Zydrunas Rackauskas snatched 13 caroms while adding eight tallies.

Kirron Ward was the lone Brevard double figure scorer with 15 points.

Leading 16-15 with 3:37 left in the first half, UVa-Wise outscored the visitors 9-3 the rest of the stanza behind two Soles triples and one from Gemmell to lead 27-18.

Gemmell hit two free throws with 11:15 left in the game for the largest lead of 16 points, 40-24. Brevard made one last run in the game by scoring eight-straight points to make it 42-34 with 5:57 showing. Rackauskas made two foul shots and C.J. Crowder an inside basket from Gemmell and the Cavs’ lead would not dip under 10 points again for the eventual 55-45 win.

UVa-Wise will take to the road next week for two games starting at Union College Tuesday night for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
