January 24, 2006
Boxscore

Barboursville, KY – Jarred Soles’ 30-point effort proved to not be enough as the University of Virginia’s College at Wise men’s basketball fell to Union College. The Bulldogs held home court to take the 74-64 Appalachian Athletic Conference victory.

Union College maintains its second place standing in the AAC at 10-3 and 16-7 for the year. UVa-Wise goes to 4-9 in the league and 8-14 on the season.

Soles dropped four three-pointers and made all eight of his free throws to hit a career-high 30 points. Forward Zydrunas Rackauskas posted a big night as well with 20 points on five of eight shots and 10 of 16 from the charity stripe while grabbing eight rebounds. Seth Gibson chipped in 11 points and four assists.

Union netted the first basket of the game before Parker Gemmell gave UVa-Wise what would be its only lead with a three-pointer. The game continued to be close, 9-7, in the opening six minutes. Leading 13-10, the Bulldogs busted out on a 16-0 run to make it 29-10 before taking a 35-19 halftime advantage.

Down 46-33, Soles and Gibson knocked down triples for the Cavs to make it 46-39 with 13 minutes left. The visitors were able to pull to within six points, 64-58, one more time when Rackauskas completed a three-point play with 4:08 remaining in the game. UVa-Wise would get no closer to fall 74-64.

The Cavs will finish the week road trip with a 7:30 p.m. contest at Bluefield College Saturday night.
