February 3, 2006
Boxscore

Wise, VA – Parker Gemmell went three for four in the final 10 seconds from the foul line to take the University of Virginia’s College at Wise over Milligan College men’s basketball Friday night. After a Buffalo three-pointer with four seconds, Gemmell downed his final two charity stripe attempts for the 62-59 Highland Cavalier victory.

The win for UVa-Wise takes the program back to double digits victories for the season at 10-15 after winning three games a year ago. The Cavs also go to 6-10 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference while the Buffaloes fall to 3-12 and 9-14 overall.

Gemmell ( Bristol, VA/John S. Battle) paced all scorers with 21 points. Freshman Zydrunas Rackauskas picked up his eighth double-double with 18 tallies and grabbed 14 boards. Ray Baily and Joey Blackwell ( Kingsport, TN) added nine points apiece. Carlos Goodwyn handed out four assists.

Milligan saw Zach Dezarn and Jeff Barnes both account for double-doubles on the night. Dezarn scored 20 points and had 10 rebounds while Barnes chipped in 12 tallies and 15 caroms. Adrian Harrison added 13 points.

Trailing 32-31 at the half, the Buffaloes opened the second stanza on a 9-1 run for their largest lead of the night of 40-33. The Cavs answered back with their own 11-0 spurt to edge back in front 44-40 with 11:31 left.

Tino Washington gave Milligan what would be its final advantage, 53-52, on a triple3 with 5:36 in the game. Blackwell downed his third three-pointer less than half a minute later and UVa-Wise would not trail again and went on for the 62-59 win.

UVa-Wise will be off until traveling to face Alice Lloyd College Tuesday night for a 7:30 p.m. tilt.
