Covenant Edges UVa-Wise Men’s Hoops Friday

Wise, VA – Covenant College edged The University of Virginia’s College at Wise in men’s basketball Friday night. The Scots never trailed in the contest but required making three of four foul shots in the final 37 seconds to take away the 66-62 victory over the Highland Cavaliers.
Covenant improves it mark to 11-16 and 10-7 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. UVa-Wise falls for the second time this week and are now 10-17 on the year and 6-11 in the league.
Parker Gemmell (Bristol, VA) had the game-high honors with 24 points including nine of 10 foul shots and three assists. Zydrunas Rackauskas posted a double-double of 16 points and 14 rebounds. Seth Gibson added eight points and Carlos Goodwyn five assists.
The Scots’ Jonathan McClellan paced the team with 15 points off the bench. The Covenant bench outscored the UVa-Wise bench 31-12. Nate Beers, Josh Suddath and Dan Nielson each hit double figures with 14, 13 and 10 points. Beers added seven assists and six caroms.
Covenant led by as many as nine points, 42-33, six minutes into the final half. Rackauskas laid the ball in to help the Cavs cut the difference down to two points, 53-51, with 5:25 left on the clock.
A McClellan three-pointer pushed the margin back to seven points, 60-53, three minutes later. The Cave proceeded to make three trips to the foul line where they went six of six along with a Gemmell layup to make it 63-61 at 1:07.
Rackauskas connected on one of two attempts with 40 seconds left to make it 63-62 before the Scots scored the final three points from the charity stripe for the 66-62 final.
UVa-Wise will finish its home schedule with a 6:00 p.m. matchup against Bryan College on Saturday.
