Cavs Bounce Back Against Bryan

February 11, 2006
Boxscore

Wise, VA – After suffering a close Friday night defeat, The University of Virginia’s College at Wise bounced back against Bryan College in men’s basketball. The Highland Cavaliers received a career-high 19 points from Joey Blackwell to spur the 65-59 win over the Lions.

UVa-Wise fell to Covenant College in a close 66-62 contest last night before taking its mark to 11-17 overall and 7-11 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference with Saturday’s win. Bryan drops to 11-13 and 8-10 in the league.

Blackwell ( Kingsport, TN/Dobyns Bennett) downed five of seven triples and hit six of eight attempts from the floor for his career-best 19-point effort. The Cavs’ lone senior, Parker Gemmell ( Bristol, VA/John S. Battle), added 14 points and five assists. Zydrunas Rackauskas posted another double-double with 12 points and 10 boards.

The Lions saw Versell Wells pace the team with 15 points and eight rebounds. Nick Hansen added 13 tallies, nine caroms and four assists.

After a close 27-25 UVa-Wise halftime score, Bryan’s Tyler Cook tied the contest 23 seconds in the second half. Ray Bailey put the Cavs back on top, 29-27, the next trip down the court on a pass from Gemmell. The home team would never trail again in a very physical contest.

Bryan was able to get the lead down to a single point four times but could not edge on top. The Lions’ Jonathan Little cut the difference down to two points, 61-59, with 23 seconds left in the game from the foul line.

Carlos Goodwyn fired a halfcourt pass to Rackauskas with no one around to make it 63-59. Blackwell iced the affair by hitting two foul shots with two seconds left for the 65-59 final.

UVa-Wise will travel to Virginia Intermont to start the final week of the regular season for a 7:30 p.m. game Tuesday.
