Gibson and Gemmell Spur UVa-Wise Comeback Men’s Hoops Win

Wise, VA – Seth Gibson posted a big night and Parker Gemmell pumped in the biggest shot of the night the game to lead the University of Virginia’s College at Wise men’s basketball team to a come from behind win, 75-72, over Alice Lloyd College.
 
Behind 69-63 with 5:26 left, the Highland Cavaliers went on a key 8-0 spurt over the next four minutes.  After a Joey Blackwell foul shot and three-pointer by Jarred Soles, Gemmell pumped in his lone trey of the night to give UVa-Wise its first lead of the night, 70-69, with 2:55 left.  Gemmell added a layup just over a minute later to make it 72-69 Cavs. 
 
Blackwell and Gemmell connected on three of four three throws in the final 47 seconds to seal the 75-72 win over the Eagles.
 
Gibson was the outstanding player all night for UVa-Wise (2-1) with a career-best 22 points on eight of 13 shooting with two three-pointers and downed all four free throws.  He added eight rebounds, four assists and two steals.  Gemmell scored 13 of his 14 points of the night in the second half while Chris Mpembele had eight of his 10 tallies in the second half.  Mpembele added eight boards and three assists.
 
Alice Lloyd’s Jeremy Daniels scored the game’s first points 21 seconds into the contest.  The Eagles (0-2) led the entire first half with a 33-29 intermission advantage and enjoyed as much as a 12-point cushion four times midway through the second half before the Cavs comeback.
 
UVa-Wise won the battle on the boards 53-33 and outscored Alice Lloyd 28-13 over the final 11 minutes of the game.
 
Shawn Newsome hit for 18 points with four from long-range and Brent Pritchard added 11 points for the Eagles.
 
UVa-Wise will return to action on Friday night when they face Southern Virginia at the Bluefield College Tournament.
