UVa-Wise Comeback Falls Short

Bluefield, VA – After the second-straight come from behind win Friday night, the Highland Cavaliers saw their bid for a third consecutive comeback fall short against the Crusaders. Tennessee Temple rode an eight-point lead at the intermission to hang on for a 69-64 victory over the University of Virginia's College at Wise men's basketball team at the Bluefield College Classic.
Tennessee Temple was able to outshoot UVa-Wise in both halves. The Crusaders were able to make 13 of 30 shots (43.3%) in the opening half to the Cavs 39.1% to lead 36-28 at the half.
The Cavs (3-2) fought back in the second half but could not complete the comeback fully as they won the second half by only three points, 36-33. Tennessee Temple took advantage of 24 UVa-Wise turnovers to edge out the win, 69-64.
UVa-Wise did win the battle on the glass, 36-26, and hit eight of its 15 three-point attempts. Senior guard Parker Gemmell paced the Cavs with 18 points by hitting seven of 11 shots including four of six from long-range. Gemmell also stole three balls and had two assists. Freshman Zydrunas Rackauskas posted his first double-double with 16 points and 11 boards. Rackauskas made 12 of 17 free throws. Jarred Soles was the other double digit scorer with 14 points including a trio of three-pointers.
The Cavs return to action on Tuesday night in the Appalachian Athletic Conference opener at Montreat College for a 7:30 p.m. tipoff. |
