Bears Pounce on Cavs

Pikeville, KY – A 12-day layoff is usually never good during a basketball season. The case held true for the UVA-Wise Highland Cavaliers who were pounced upon by the host Pikeville College Bears, 70-48, Saturday afternoon.
Pikeville (8-8) received back-to-back three-pointers from Brad Lowe and Bo Harris to start the contest and never trailed. The closest UVA-Wise (5-10) was able to cut the margin was on its first basket by Bryan Sexton to make it 6-2. The visitors pulled to within six points twice later in the opening half but could get no closer as they trailed 37-21 before falling 70-48.
Seth Gibson ( Wytheville, VA) tied a career-high of 22 points including six of nine three-pointers for the Cavs. Gibson also grabbed seven boards and handed out two assists. Zydrunas Rackauskas added 11 points and hauled in eight caroms. UVA-Wise made eight of 27 attempts (29.6%) in the first half and only 34.7% for the game as well as connecting on six of 16 free throws.
Pikeville was paced by Will Holloman’s double-double of 18 points and 11 rebounds to go with seven assists. Lowe and Harris joined Holloman in double digits with 15 and 11 tallies.
UVA-Wise returns home next Thursday, January 4 th for a 6:00 p.m. affair against Appalachian Athletic Conference foe Tennessee Wesleyan.
