Soles Hits 1,000 but Scots Prevail

Lookout Mountain, GA – Jarred Soles became the newest member of the University of Virginia’s College at Wise men’s basketball 1,000-point club Tuesday night. The junior had a team-high 17 points but it was not enough as Covenant College prevailed 63-55.

Soles (Yorktown, VA/ York) drained a three-pointer with 15:54 left in the game to put him over the 1,000-point mark for his career. The junior went into the night needing eight points and came away with a team-high 17 points to give him 1,009. He added three assists and four boards. Joey Blackwell (Kingsport, TN/Dobyns-Bennett) was lone other double figure scorer with 12 tallies. Zydrunas Rackauskas and Bryan Sexton (Lebanon, VA) grabbed 10 caroms apiece. UVA-Wise (6-16/3-8 Appalachian Athletic Conference) won the rebound battle, 37-30, but committed more turnovers, 24-17.

Covenant (8-13/5-6 AAC) received two outstanding performances from the Skogen brothers with 20 points from Jacob and 19 points from Caleb, who also had seven rebounds and seven assists. James Cunningham added 10 points.

The Scots rode an eight-point, 30-22, lead into the halftime. The home lead grew to as many as 12 points before the Highland Cavaliers battled back to tie the contest, 43-43. UVA-Wise committed some costly turnovers down the stretch and Covenant was able to mount a six-point advantage before scoring an uncontest layup as time ran out for the 63-55 victory.

UVA-Wise retuns home Saturday afternoon for a 4:00 p.m. against Virginia Intermont.
