Tornado Hot Shooting Blows Past Cavs

Wise, VA – King College used 10 first half three-pointers and held a large 32-point lead early in the second half before fending off UVA-Wise men’s basketball to win 88-77.

The Tornados claimed their seventh win in a row to improve to 15-9 overall and 9-4 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference. The Highland Cavaliers fall to 7-17 and 4-9 in the league.

In a losing effort, Jarred Soles (Yorktown, VA), the AAC Player of the Week, netted a career-best 31 points on 10 of 17 attempts, five three-pointers and five assists. Seth Gibson (Wytheville, VA) added a season-high 24 points on eight of 10 shots. Zydrunas Rackauskas chipped in 10 tallies and nine boards.

RuShaun Reeves was deadly from three-point range by hitting seven of nine tries for a team-best 21 points for King. Torrington Cox added 17 points. Phil Weatherford and Josh Edwards reached double digits with 12 and 11 points while Clarence Smith grabbed seven caroms with eight points.

Edwards drained a three-pointer just under five minutes into the contest to give King a 9-6 lead it would never relinquish. The Tornados led 21-13 before rattling off a 14-0 spurt for a 35-13 tally that the Cavs could not recover fully. The visitors went on to enjoy a 54-31 halftime score.

The difference grew to its highest of 32 points, 69-37, with 13:48 left in the game. UVA-Wise came on the rest of the way to outscore King, 40-21, before running out of time to fall 88-77.

UVA-Wise will go back on the road for a 4:00 p.m. contest at Tennessee Wesleyan Saturday.
