UVA-Wise Hoops Play Tough at DI Longwood

Farmville, VA – Playing for the third time in less than three days, UVA-Wise played its NCAA Division I opponent, Longwood University, extremely tough before falling. The Lancers came out strong in the second half for the 71-49 victory.
The Highland Cavaliers (0-2) enjoyed small leads of two points two times in the opening six minutes. Longwood (1-0) opened a lead by as many as five points before the visitors outscored the host, 9-3, for a 19-18 lead at 4:51 on a Seth Gibson three-pointer.
A Gibson jumper at 3:54 gave UVA-Wise its fourth lead of the game, 21-19, before Longwood took advantage of six turnovers in the final three minutes for 31-24 halftime score.
UVA-Wise cut the score back to one possession, 35-32, on a field goal from Zydrunas Rackauskas inside. The Lancers scored the next eight points to lead 42-32. The Cavs could not get any closer than eight points, 46-38, with 12:50 left in the game before falling 71-49.
Rackauskas and Gibson paced UVA-Wise with 11 points. Rackauskas grabbed six boards and had two assists. Cassidy Vaughan added nine tallies. The Cavs defense held the NCAA Division I Lancers to 47.3% from the field.
Maurice Sumter hit for 19 points while Clayton Morgan had a double-double with 14 points and 13 rebounds to lead the home team.
UVA-Wise will open its home docket when it hosts Pikeville College next Wednesday night, November 15 th for a 5:30 p.m. contest.
