Bulldogs Bites Highland Cavaliers with Late Run

Barbourville, NC – Trailing 70-69 with seven minutes left, Union College went on a late 12-1 game-deciding run to bite UVA-Wise men’s basketball team, 90-80, Saturday evening in the Appalachian Athletic Conference regular season finale.
Jarred Soles pumped in 20 points to lead four double figure scorers for the Highland Cavaliers (7-23/4-14 AAC). Zydrunas Rackauskas made four of seven shots for 16 points and six boards. Daniel Adams had a season-high 15 tallies by making all six of his attempts. Bryan Sexton had a double-double of 12 points and 10 rebounds.
Union (12-18/6-12 AAC) received 23 points on nine of 12 attempts from Aaron Dunaway. Kevin Jones added 14 points. Chris Stunson, Brian Kirk and Anthony Coole chipped in 12, 11 and 10 points.
The Cavs dominated the action early in the game. The visitors opened a 10-point lead, 16-6, capped by a Soles jumper with 13:12 in the half. The Bulldogs came back to within a singe point before being down 41-38 at the half.
Soles made the UVA-Wise advantage back to five points two times with two field goals in the first minute and a half. The home team edge ahead, 48-47, on a Coote basket at 16:14.
Union held the lead until Adams hit a layup at 7:14 for a 70-69 tally. Dunaway tied the contest with one of two free throws to start what would be a 12-1 spurt over the next six minutes to decide the game. The Bulldogs went on for a 90-80 win.
UVA-Wise will now be off until playing in an opening round game of the AAC tournament on Thursday at King College.
