Cavs Take Bears in Overtime

Wise, VA – After two one-point margin halves, the men’s basketball game was destined for overtime. UVA-Wise scored first in the extra period and never trailed as it defeated Pikeville College, 70-65.

The Highland Cavaliers (1-2) made eight of nine free throws in overtime and led by as many as the final difference of five four times. The Bears (0-5) sent the contest into overtime when Donald Thomas made a driving layup with less than a second to tie the affair at 59-59.

UVA-Wise was led by Zydrunas Rackauskas, who had 23 points including 14 of 17 free throws and four of five from the floor to go with 12 rebounds. Jarred Soles and Seth Gibson were both in double figures with 15 and 13 tallies. Joey Blackwell and Pance Kecev had three assists apiece.

Freshman Brad Lowe dropped in 19 points for Pikeville. Donald Thomas and Donnell Dobbins contributed 14 and 11 points. Thomas handed out six assists and Robert Walker grabbed 11 caroms.

The Cavs led nine points, 18-9, midway through the first half before the Bears finished strong for a 34-33 halftime lead. Pikeville led by six points in the second half before Rackauskas made one of two free throws for a 59-57 score before the Thomas driving shot.

UVA-Wise will travel for the Berea College Tournament on Friday and Saturday where it will play Centre College at 6:00 p.m. in the opening game.
