Colonels Trump Highland Cavaliers at Berea Tournament

Berea, KY – In the opening night of the Berea College Tournament, the Centre College Colonels never trailed to defeat The University of Virginia’s College at Wise Friday night in men’s basketball. The Colonels extended a 47-31 halftime lead to an 84-60 final tally over the Highland Cavaliers.

Coming off a 19-8 season, Centre takes its record to 1-0 in the season opener while UVA-Wise falls to 1-3 in the early season.

Sophomore Zydrunas Rackauskas had the best game of either team on the night. Rackauskas hit eight of 12 shots for 24 points to go with 13 rebounds for his second double-double of the week. Junior Jarred Soles was the other lone double figure scorer for the Cavs with 15 points on six of 12 attempts. Bryan Sexton added eight points and Joey Blackwell pulled in five boards.

Centre had four double figure scorers paced by Matt Jacobson’s 18 points. John Patterson had his own double-double with 12 points and 15 caroms. The Colonels hit 13 three-pointers to the Cavs one and owned over a 20% advantage in field goal percentage.

UVA-Wise will now play the loser of the tournament’s second game between host Berea College and Crown College at 1:00 p.m. on Saturday.
