Wise, VA – The Wasps buzzed past the Highland Cavaliers Tuesday night by forcing 39 turnovers and outscoring the home team by 16 points in the second half of the men’s hoops contest. Emory & Henry College led the final 26 minutes of the game to defeat UVA-Wise 120-101.
Emory & Henry (2-1) posted a balanced attack which featured seven double figure scorers. Antonio Leary had top honors with 18 points on six of seven shooting while Korey Townsend chipped in 12 tallies. Camillo Weinz, Andrew Hart and Robert Hudson added 11 points apiece while Kevin Viers had 10. Hart added five assists and Jarell Christian four steals. The Wasps won the battle on the boards 40-34.
UVA-Wise (2-4) saw its first 100-point game in recent seasons. Jarred Soles had the hot hand with 10 of 14 shots including four of five from long-range for 26 points. Zydrunas Rackauskas added 24 points on seven of 10 from the floor and 10 of 13 free throws to go with nine boards. Bryan Sexton had a collegiate career-best 19 points against his former team while Seth Gibson produced 13 points. Cassidy Vaughan and Joey Blackwell handed out eight and six assists. The Cavs shot extremely well as they made 35 of 58 attempts for 60.3% but turned the ball over 39 times including 21 times in the second stanza.
After a back-and-forth opening 13 minutes, Emory & Henry rattled off an 11-0 run to take the lead, 40-33, at 5:16 in the first half which they would not lose the rest of the game. A Gibson layup and later a three-pointer pulled UVA-Wise to within a point two times before the visitors went to half leading, 54-51.
Emory & Henry built the margin up to a game-high 10 points, 73-63, in the opening five minutes of the second half. UVA-Wise made a couple runs but could not get the difference down to any less than four points, 80-76, on two Rackauskas free throws with 11:35 in the game. The Wasps pulled away in the final seven minutes for the 120-101 victory.
The two squads will meet for a second time in just nine days on November 30 th at Emory & Henry for a 7:30 p.m. contest. The Cavs return to action this weekend when they travel to Cleveland, TN for the Lee University on Friday and Saturday.
