Johnson Basket Spurs Late Run Takes Lee over UVA-Wise

Cleveland, TN – Kedrick Johnson’s basket with 3:33 left in the game spurred a 12-2 run to take host Lee University over UVA-Wise men’s basketball Friday night. The Flames recorded a 63-54 victory over the Highland Cavaliers in its Baymont Inn Tournament.
UVA-Wise (2-5) was led by junior Jarred Soles, who hit six of 12 attempts for 17 points and had two assists. Joey Blackwell and Pance Kecev each chipped in eight tallies while Cassidy Vaughan had seven points. The team played without leading scorer and rebounder Zydrunas Rackauskas. The Cavs shot just 36.4% for the contest and were outrebounded 44-25.
After trailing 30-26 at half, UVA-Wise was able to lead by a slim margin four times in the second half. The Cavs had their last short lived advantage when Chris Stamper made his lone field goal in the key for a 52-51 lead at 5:03.
Johnson made what turned out to be the game-winner two possessions later for Lee (5-2) to pull ahead the host, 53-52. The Flames outscored the Cavs 12-2 the final three minutes for the 63-54 final.
UVA-Wise missed its final seven shots, six of them from three-point range, and made one of four free throws. The visitors also had one turnover in the last three minutes.
Kellen Pickel led Lee with 19 points. Johnson added 13 points and a game-high nine rebounds while Sir-Lee Mason scored 12 points.
The Cavs will now play Berea College in the consolation game starting at 6:30 p.m. Saturday night.
