Soles’ Jumper with Four Seconds Give Cavs Victory Over Mountaineers

Cleveland, TN – With four seconds left, Jarred Soles’ jumper in the key with four seconds left took the Highland Cavaliers past the Mountaineers Saturday. UVA-Wise led the whole game until Berea completed its comeback to take the lead with 35 ticks until Soles’ shot for a 64-63 win to take Lee University’s Baymont Inn Thanksgiving Invitational consolation game.

Soles (Yorktown, VA/ York) was the game’s brightest star with 28 points on nine of 13 attempts and drained eight of 10 free throws to go with four rebounds. Forward Bryan Sexton (Lebanon, VA) grabbed eight boards while scoring 12 points on five of seven attempts. Freshman Chris Stamper (Clay City, KY/Wolfe County) had his best game of the season with 11 points including three from long-range. Pance Kecev (Nickelsville, VA) added nine tallies and Joey Blackwell (Kingsport, TN) handed out four assists.

UVA-Wise (3-5) built a 21-12 lead in the opening 10 minutes on a Stamper trey. The Cavs extended the difference to as many as 17 before taking a 44-28 score into the half.

Trailing 57-44 with 7:32, Berea started its fierce comeback. The Mountaineers (3-5) went on a 10-1 spurt over the next 3:22 to cut it to 58-54. Berea continued chipping away until Tomas Klimas hit an inside field goal with 35 seconds for its first lead, 63-62, before the Soles game-winner.

Ryan Hudson and Melvin Brown were the two double figures scorers for Berea with 12 and 11 points.

The two squads will meet again next month in Wise for a 7:30 p.m. contest at Greear Gym.

UVA-Wise will be off until hosting its Appalachian Athletic Conference opener Tuesday night against Bryan College at 7:30 p.m.
