Cavs' Helton and Soles Claim AAC Basketball Weekly Honors

Wise, VA – Sarah Helton and Jarred Soles claimed a clean sweep of the Appalachian Athletic Conference basketball Player of the Week honors for UVA-Wise announced Monday afternoon.

For the second time in the 2006-07 campaign, Helton earned the league’s weekly honor. Sarah (Wise, VA) averaged 27.0 points and 8.5 rebounds in the Lady Cavs’ two contests they split last week. In a 76-70 losing effort at Covenant College last Tuesday, the senior hit 12 of 22 attempts for 30 points, her season-best, and 12 rebounds for a double-double while swiping four balls and three assists.

The biggest highlight of the forward’s week and one her top accomplishments of her UVA-Wise (5-18/4-8 AAC) career came with 15:53 left in the game on a layup Saturday afternoon. The basket gave Helton her 2,000 th career point, the second to reach the milestone in the history of the UVA-Wise program. Sarah finished the game with 24 points on nine of 18 shots to go with six steals, five rebounds and five assists in the 89-66 win over Virginia Intermont.

Sarah leads the Lady Cavs for the third-year in a row with an 18.5-point and 7.9 rebound per game averages with 61 steals.

Soles earned his AAC honor with two solid outings. The junior guard produced an average of 21.5 points and seven three-pointers. The Yorktown, VA native hit a three-pointer with 15:54 left in the game to become the newest member of the Cavs’ 1,000-point club. He scored 17 points to go with four boards and three assists in a 63-55 defeat at Covenant College in the Tuesday evening game.

The York High product followed the first game with 26-point effort to pace UVA-Wise (7-16/4-8 AAC) over Virginia Intermont, 85-74, Saturday afternoon.

He leads the Cavs with a 16.3 point average and 51 three-pointers on the season.

UVA-Wise will next host King College in a Tuesday night doubleheader at Greear Gym with the women at 5:30 p.m. and the men at 7:30 p.m.
