Cavs Squander Big Lead, Fall to Blue Raiders

Columbia, Ky. – After extending an eight-point halftime lead to 15 points early in the second half, UVa-Wise fell apart and squandered its advantage to fall to host NAIA Division I Lindsey Wilson, 83-66, in men’s basketball Thursday night.
Sophomore Pance Kecev (Nickelsville, Va.) hit four triples and seven of 14 attempts for a game-best 19 points. Adam Hood (Rye Cove, Va.) and Jarred Soles (Yorktown, Va.) added 11 and 10 points as the other double figure UVa-Wise scorers. Joey Blackwell dished out five assists.
The Cavs made just seven of 32 shots (21.9%) from the floor in the deciding second half. The team was also outrebounded 41-33 while Lindsey Wilson made 15 of 27 (55.6%) in the latter stanza.
George White paced the Blue Raiders with 19 points. Antonio Logwood added 16 points while Ralph Jennings had a double-double of 12 points and 11 boards.
The Highland Cavaliers (6-9) led by a 42-34 score at the half after leading by as many as 11 points in the last 10 seconds. A Justin Sorensen rebound and put back gave UVa-Wise its largest lead of the night, 54-39, with 14:30 left in the game. Lindsey Wilson (8-6) went on a game-changing 19-2 run over the next six minutes to take the lead 58-56.
Daniel Adams made two free throws to tie the contest, 58-58, before the Blue Raiders went on a second spurt of 11-1 to make it 69-59 and would never look back again to win 83-66.
UVa-Wise will now be off until trekking to Athens, Tenn. to return to Appalachian Athletic Conference action at Tennessee Wesleyan for a 7:30 p.m. affair next Wednesday, January 9th.
