UVa-Wise Team Effort Powers Past Montreat

Wise, Va. – UVa-Wise built a double figure lead 10 minutes into the men’s basketball contest and received 59 points from the bench to power past Montreat College, 90-67, Saturday evening in Appalachian Athletic Conference action.
The Highland Cavaliers (7-10/3-3 AAC) put five players in double figures led by junior Travis Willis’ (Woodbridge, Va.) 12 points off the bench with Adam Hood (Rye Cove, Va.) and Robert Amis (Hazard, Ky.) both hitting for 11 apiece of the non-starters. Bryan Sexton (Lebanon, Va.) was a perfect five of five for 11 points and Pance Kecev (Nickelsville, Va.) hit the same total of 11 including three from long-range. Daniel Adams (Floyd, Va.) chipped in eight points.Eric Swords (Williamsburg, Ky.) contributed seven points.
Senior Jarred Soles (Yorktown, Va.) scored just half of his 14.8-point average with seven tallies on the night but he moved to sixth on the school’s all-time scoring list with 1,440 career points.
UVa-Wise made 32 of 62 (51.6%) for the game and won the battle on the glass 41-32.
Montreat (5-11/3-3 AAC) received a 19-point effort by Kinard Barnett.
Over the first four minutes, the home team led 11-2 after a Swords jumper in the lane. The margin rose to double digits just inside 10 minutes when Hood drained a bucket to make it 23-13. Two free throws by Soles at 5:24 put the margin back to at least 10 points, 29-19, and Montreat would never get any closer the rest of the game. The Highland Cavaliers finished the first half on a 15-8 mark to lead 44-27.
Amis hit a triple with 15:34 on the clock for a 55-35 score until UVa-Wise coasted the rest of the way for the 90-67 final.
UVa-Wise will next travel for a 7:30 p.m. affair at AAC rival Bluefield College on next Tuesday night, January 15th.
