Balance Attack Takes Cavs Over Vikings
November 2, 2007
BOXSCORE
Mount Berry, Ga. – A balanced scoring attack proved to be enough to take the UVa-Wise men’s basketball team to a season opening win over host Berry College, 93-87, in the first night of the Berry College Classic.
The Highland Cavaliers (1-0) saw five players hit in double figures led by freshman Adam Hood (Duffield, Va./Rye Cove), who poured in 18 points. Senior Seth Gibson (Wytheville, Va./George Wythe) was one rebound shy of a double-double with 16 points and nine boards. Junior transfer Eric Swords (Williamsburg, Ky./ Williamsburg) and Jarred Soles (Yorktown, Va./York) added 14 points apiece. Joey Blackwell (Kingsport, Tenn./Dobyns-Bennett) handed out three assists and chipped in 10 tallies.
UVa-Wise held a 47-39 halftime advantage. Berry outscored the visitors 48-46 but could not overcome the UVa-Wise long-range shooting of 12 of 27 from three-point distance to fall 93-87.
The Cavs will continue in the second day of the Classic when they face Shorter College on Saturday in a 4:00 p.m. affair.
