Bulldogs Hold on Over Cavs

Barbourville, Ky. – Jarred Soles game-tying three-pointer from the top of the key fell short to allow Union College hold on for an 83-80 victory over UVa-Wise in men’s basketball Tuesday night.
The two squads are both now 4-5 in the Appalachian Athletic Conference standings. The Bulldogs improved to 14-7 while the Cavs fell to 8-12.
Junior Bryan Sexton (Lebanon, Va.) had a big night for UVa-Wise as he hit seven of 10 tries for 18 points and grabbed six rebounds. Adam Hood (Rye Cove, Va.) and Eric Swords (Williamsburg, Ky.) came off the bench for 13 and 11 tallies. Joey Blackwell (Kingsport, Tenn.) handed out six assists.
UVa-Wise hit 10 of 23 attempts from long-range but were outrebounded 34-27 by Union.
Tied 73-73 with 2:39 left in the game, the Bulldogs scored the next seven points to lead 80-73 with 52 seconds on the clock. The Cavs worked the margin down to two points, 82-80, on a Sexton short jumper with 14 seconds. After Union’s Aaron Dunaway made one of two free throws for a three-point advantage, UVa-Wise called a timeout with nine seconds. Soles fired a trey from the top of the key that fell short and Union grabbed the rebound to end the tight game.
The Bulldogs led by 10 points, 42-32, at half to see the Cavs battle back to take the lead two times in the latter half.
UVa-Wise will look to rebound with two home games this weekend with a 7:30 p.m. affair against Covenant College Friday night before Bryan College enters Greear Gym for a 6:00 p.m. Saturday contest.
