BOXSCORE
Wise, Va. – Jarred Soles became the sixth UVa-Wise men’s basketball player to reach 1,500 career points Saturday but Bryan College spoiled his enjoyment by edging out the win 61-59 in Appalachian Athletic Conference action.
Soles, a senior from Yorktown, Va. needed 10 points heading into the game and posted 12 tallies in the first half before finishing the night for the Highland Cavaliers (9-13/5-6 AAC) with 18. After three back surgeries, the senior stands sixth in career scoring with 1,508 points and should move into fifth past Mario Walker (1992-96), who had 1,584 points, in the coming weeks. Jarred entered the 2007-08 season with 1,196 points and has 302 tallies this season with a team-leading 14.2 ppg average.
Adam Hood (Rye Cove, Va.) was the home team’s lone other double digit performer with 16 points including four treys.
Bryan (9-12/3-7 AAC) won the rebound battle, 35-29, and held UVa-Wise to just 38.5% from the field in the deciding second half, 10-percent less than the 48.0% in the first half. Lamarr Shorts led all scorers with 21 points and Damond Craig hit for 12 points.
Trailing 31-30, the Lions roared out of the intermission to outscore the Cavs 21-9 in the first 10 minutes to take an 11-point lead, 51-40, which they wouldn’t relinquish. The Cavs came back to pull to within one two times in the last three minutes with the final coming at 57-56 on a Hood triple with 2:20 left. Shorts made three of six free throws in the final 1:20 and UVa-Wise could not do enough to regain the lead to fall 61-59.
The Cavs led by as many as nine points, 20-11, in the opening half on a Soles jumper before the Lions chipped away the rest of the half to trail by one at the half.
UVa-Wise will stay at home for a Tuesday night non-conference meeting with Alice Lloyd in a 7:30 p.m. tip-off.
