UVa-Wise Comeback Falls Just Short Against Asbury

Wilmore, Ky. – After trailing by as many as 12 points in the second half, UVa-Wise enstilled a press defense to chip away the deficit only to have Asbury’s Brett Johnson block a potential game-tying shot with 2.9 seconds left to seal an 87-85 home team victory.
Senior Jarred Soles (Yorktown, Va.) hit nine of 17 attempts for 22 points to lead the Cavs (1-2) effort. Adam Hood (Rye Cove, Va.), Bryan Sexton (Lebanon, Va.) and Joey Blackwell (Kingsport, Tenn.) produced double figures totals with 14, 13 and 10 tallies. Eric Swords (Williamsburg, Ky.) dished out four assists.
Asbury (2-2) went on an 18-2 run over the last seven minutes of the first half after being down to UVa-Wise 33-19 to take a 37-35 lead at intermission. The Eagles held the 12-point lead before the Cavs came within a basket of tying the contest in the final seconds.
Johnson led the home team with 26 points on 10 of 17 attempts and nine boards.
UVa-Wise will move on to play at Berea College on Saturday night for a 7:30 p.m. contest.
