DI Longwood Handles UVa-Wise

Farmville, Va. – The UVa-Wise men’s basketball team was able to hold its own against NCAA Division I Longwood University on Thursday night before falling 89-67. Freshman Robert Amis paced the Highland Cavaliers effort with a season-high 16 points.
The Lancers (2-1) held just a 41-31 advantage at intermission before the Cavs (3-3) cut the difference to eight, 47-39, three minutes into the second stanza before pulling away.
Amis (Hazard, Ky.) made five of 11 shots for 16 points. Senior Jarred Soles (Yorktown, Va.) added 13 tallies, handed out four assists and stole two passes. Joey Blackwell (Kingsport, Tenn.) rounded out the double figure scorers with 10 points. Center Justin Sorensen (Suffolk, Va.) grabbed five boards and hit three of four attempts for eight points.
Kirk Williams paced the Lancers with an impressive 29 points on 12 of 18 shooting and 10 caroms. Dana Smith contributed 20 points and eight boards.
After Sorensen tied the game at 2-2 just 37 seconds into the game, Longwood scored the next 14 points to make it 16-2. The lead grew to as many as 16 points, 35-19, before UVa-Wise mounted its own 10-0 spurt for a 35-29 score with 2:53 in the opening half. The Lancers won the final three minutes, 6-2, for a 41-31 halftime tally.
Soles laid in a basket at 16:55 for a 47-39 score. The visitors would not be able to get any closer in the second half for the eventual 89-67 final.
UVa-Wise will take on its second Division I opponent on Saturday when it treks to Charleston Southern for a 6:00 p.m. contest.
