UVa-Wise Use Triples to Take Randolph Men’s Hoops

Wise, Va. – UVa-Wise used 14 triples, nine in the first half, to take Randolph College, 67-47, in men’s hoops on Tuesday night.
The Highland Cavaliers (4-4) saw Seth Gibson (Wytheville, Va./George Wythe) hit a perfect four of four from three-point range for a team-high 12 points. Pance Kecev (Nickelsville, Va./Twin Springs) hit three treys of his own for nine points while Jarred Soles (Yorktown, Va./York) and Adam Hood (Rye Cove, Va./Rye Cove) had eight tallies. Joey Blackwell (Kingsport, Tenn./Dobyns-Bennett) added five assists, five rebounds and six points on the night.
The Wildcats (1-2) were led by Pete Hamilton’s 18 points on seven of 14 from the floor. Tim Clarke came off the bench for 10 points as the other double figure scorer. Jimmy Greene grabbed a game-best 11 caroms.
Kecev and Gibson opened the game with back-to-back three-pointers as the Cavs hit six triples in the opening 11 minutes to open a 24-8 advantage. Daniel Adam (Floyd, Va./Floyd) wrapped up the first half with a layup with 18 seconds in the half to make it 38-18.
Randolph was able to cut the deficit down to 13 points, 42-29, on two Eric Johnson foul shots with 14:44 remaining. UVa-Wise pushed the difference back to 20 points, 50-30, less than two minutes later on a Justin Sorensen (Suffolk, Va./Nanesmond River) layup and were never challenged again.
The Cavs will face their third NCAA Division I opponent in four games with a 2:00 p.m. Saturday affair at Wofford College.
